June 2019: Concerts and The Longest Day

Following our sold-out show at Green Valley CPAC, which you can watch HERE, Odaiko Sonora only got busier…

Promotional art for the benefit concert made by OS members Rebecca Bushner and Hank Tusinski.

In late April, we held a benefit concert in our own studio to raise money for our brand new gekko (moon drum), crafted by the maker of drums for the Japanese emperor. Thanks to your generosity, we hit our fundraising goal, and we’re so grateful to every single member of our community for making a 17-year dream come true. If you didn’t get a chance to see the gekko in action, check out the livestream of the concert on our Facebook page HERE – and make sure you stay tuned for your next chance to see (and hear) it live.

A few weeks later, we played host to the incredible Japanese taiko group Shidara, who performed an amazing set at the Fox Tucson Theatre. Take a peek at their post-show jam session:

Just a little after-hours taiko jam by some of the baddest cats in the universe. Shidara. At Rhythm Industry Performance Factory.

Impressed and inspired? Us too!

Coming up next for us is The Longest Day. June 22, 2019 marks the fourth year Odaiko Sonora will raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. The day is spent giving back to the space that we call home: cleaning, doing yard work, organizing, and performing other small tasks around the studio, as well as hosting a silent auction and community-building events for Rhythm Industry Performance Factory groups. If you’d like to help out, please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Lastly, if you saw us perform and want to try taiko for yourself, we’ll be running a new All Ages Recreational Taiko (AART) session starting July 6th. Learn more HERE, and register today!
